Ophthalmoscopy
This is a very important part of your examination because it checks the health of the eyes. Using a hand-held instrument (an Ophthalmoscope) a light is shone through the pupil into your eye. The Optometrist can see the internal parts clearly, including the lens, retina and optic nerve and therefore check for problems such as glaucoma, diabetes, cataracts, hypertension and macular degeneration.
To facilitate a better view of the inner parts of the eye, sometime drops are put in to make the pupils larger - this is usually done where we are checking more peripheral areas of the retina for breaks and tears.
